Poor Things Movie Storyline:
“Poor Things” is a 2023 film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Tony McNamara, based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray1. The film stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Jerrod Carmichael1.
The plot is set in Victorian London, where medical student Max McCandles becomes an assistant to the eccentric surgeon Godwin Baxter1. Max falls in love with Godwin’s ward, Bella, a childlike young woman. Godwin reveals that the woman, who was pregnant, killed herself by leaping off a bridge1. Godwin replaced the woman’s brain with that of her fetus, resulting in her having an infant’s mind, and named her Bella Baxter.
As Bella’s intelligence rapidly develops, she becomes curious about the outside world and herself. She runs off with Duncan Wedderburn, a debauched lawyer whom Godwin hired to overhaul the nuptial contract. Bella and Duncan embark on a grand journey, beginning in Lisbon, where they have frequent sex.
Bella eventually becomes a prostitute in France, where she learns more about the world, including its unfairness and the existence of socialism. Her journey comes to an end when Max finds her and informs her that Baxter is dying2. Bella returns home to bid Baxter a final farewell, and she and Max finally settle on a date for marriage. However, Bella is confronted by her husband from a former life (when she threw herself off a bridge). She is momentarily forced to return to this husband, but after he proves himself to be an evil man, Bella escapes. At long last, Bella lives happily ever after as a surgeon with Max by her side.
